Pooler v Cross Keys 11th March 2011
Pontypool 18 Cross Keys 16 Friday 11 March 2011
GERAINT O’DRISCOLL was the toast of Pontypool last night after kicking his side to a derby win against Cross Keys. The full-back kicked six penalties to help Pooler to four precious points that will go a long way towards securing their Premiership safety. Yet it had looked like all they would get for their efforts would be a losing bonus point when centre Phil Williams went over for his second try to give the visitors a 16-15 lead a minute into injury-time.
However, O’Driscoll showed nerves of steel to win it for Pooler four minutes later to spark wild celebrations among the home faithful. Errors ruled in a scrappy first half, but that wouldn’t have concerned the hosts as they headed to the changing rooms with a 6-3 lead. The kickers traded penalties in the second half before the visitors edged in front with a quality try on 65 minutes by Phil Williams.
O’Driscoll struck a pair of penalties to regain the lead for Pooler, but their line was crossed for the second time by Williams, but O’Driscoll had the last word.
Pontypool: Pens: G O’Driscoll (6).
